Skopje, North Macedonia — On September 29, 2026, Dr. Andrijana Bogdanovska represented the Center for Knowledge Management (CKM) at the Aim and Hire Workforce & Education Conference held at the Hilton in Columbus, Ohio.
Co-hosted by Ohio Excels and the Governor's Office of Workforce Transformation, the conference brought together state policy makers, business executives, and educational leaders to explore state-of-the-art strategies for aligning educational systems directly with regional labor market demands.
With Ohio recognized for implementing some of the most progressive educational and workforce development policies in the United States, CKM participated in the event to identify transferable frameworks that can strengthen workforce development, vocational training, and youth employment in North Macedonia.
Key Takeaways from the Breakout Sessions
During the conference, Dr. Bogdanovska engaged directly in three specialized breakout sessions focusing on strategic regional planning, talent pipelines, and hands-on learning:
1. Regional Blueprint & Credential Value Framework (Breakout Session 1) In the opening credential design workshop, participants explored Ohio's redesigned statewide Credential Value Framework developed in partnership with Battelle Education and Ohio Excels.
- Balancing Policy Priorities: Successful statewide implementation relies on balancing key stakeholder trade-offs: rigor vs. access, clarity vs. complexity, and ambition vs. feasibility.
- Evidence-Based Evaluation: Industry-recognized credentials are evaluated using labor market demand signals (occupational growth and wage potential) alongside observed student outcomes (educational mobility and post-secondary earnings premiums).
- Credential Bundling: The session highlighted "credential bundles"—combining complementary certifications into coherent pathways that fulfill secondary graduation requirements and prepare students for high-priority regional occupations.
2. Building Regional Talent Pipelines (Breakout Session 2)
Led by Cassie Barlow (President, Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education) and Dr. Brian Bontempo (Executive Director, Career Pathways Support Network, Ohio Department of Education and Workforce), this session presented Ohio’s Career Pathway Support Networks (CPSN).
7-Region Model: Ohio structures its workforce collaboration across 7 geographic regions. Dedicated CPSN coordinators connect local K-12 school districts, community colleges, universities, and regional employer alliances.
Integrated Platforms: Initiatives like WorkOhio leverage localized employer data to ensure educational programming directly reflects real-time regional hiring needs.
3. Experiential Learning for Career Readiness (Breakout Session 3) Featuring Sheila Cubick and Mike Woytek from The Ohio Academy of Science (OAS), this session showcased scalable models for embedding authentic, hands-on learning into school curricula.
STEM & Entrepreneurship: Programs such as Ohio STEP (Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship Program) provide structured inquiry and pitch frameworks for youth innovation. SME Internship Playbooks: Community initiatives like Building Bridges to Careers (BB2C) provide turnkey internship playbooks, helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) seamlessly structure and host student internships.
Transferring Ohio’s Educational Models to North Macedonia
The structural strategies demonstrated at the Aim and Hire conference provide CKM with a valuable framework for advocating and designing workforce policy reforms in North Macedonia:
Establishing Regional Talent Councils: Adapting Ohio's 7-region CPSN model across North Macedonia's 8 Statistical Regions can move workforce policy beyond centralized planning. Establishing regional councils uniting local municipalities, chambers of commerce, and VET schools will enable localized skill mapping tailored to regional economic needs.
Standardizing Micro-Credentials & Bundling: Applying Ohio’s Credential Value Framework can assist Macedonian educational authorities in validating non-formal micro-credentials, bundling digital and technical skills directly with secondary and tertiary qualifications.
Deploying SME Internship Frameworks: Adopting turnkey guides such as the BB2C Internship Playbook will lower administrative barriers for Macedonian companies, encouraging more local businesses to offer structured, high-quality work-based learning opportunities for young professionals.
