The The "Gazelle" project and innovations in North Macedonia and the Balkan region

Timot FamilySafe, composed of students Владимир, Андреа, Теодора and Сабрие from СОУ "Орде Чопела" - Прилеп, under the mentorship of professor Mirjana Tsetsa who competed at the МКСАФЕNET Hackathon, created the digital tool FamilySafe - an innovative solution for parental supervision and improvement of children's online safety. This tool aims to enable safe internet art for young people through cooperation between parents and children.

1. Describe your solution – what exactly did you make and how does it work?

Our solution is an application that is used for parental and children's online safety, and the main function is to allow parents to monitor the movements of their children in real time. The application has several key features:

  • Map in real time: The parent can see on the map exactly where his child is, as well as his movements during the day.
  • Data: The application provides a history of the movement of the child, so that the parent can see the location anywhere during the day or week.
  • Security zones: The parent can set virtual boundaries, fences (geofencing). If the child goes out of these limits, the parent will receive a warning.
  • Activity notifications: Parents receive notifications when the child reaches a place or exits the safety zone.
  • The application is easy to use, has a pleasant interface and with just a few clicks the parent can monitor all the activities of his child.

2. How do you see that your solution can affect and be used in a real context or in a wider community?

Our decision can have a big impact on the real context, especially in today's world where the safety of children on the Internet and in the physical environment is very important. Parents will have the opportunity to monitor their children and ensure that they are not in dangerous places, which can reduce stress and anxiety. In the wider community, this solution may be useful in various aspects:

  • Caring for children with special needs: Parents of children with autism or other special needs can follow them to make sure the children are not lost or in dangerous locations.
  • Educational institutions: It can be used in schools to monitor the safety of students during outings or activities outside the school.
  • Area of social safety: The application may be useful for institutions dealing with the safety of children and youth, as well as for the police or rescue services in cases of child rescue.

3. What additional functionalities or improvements would you like to implement in the future?

In the future, we would like to add some additional functionality:

  • Integration with smart watches: Possibility to connect with smart watches or devices for monitoring the child's health parameters (for example, heart rate, temperature).
  • Parental controls for applications: In the future, functionality will be developed that will allow parents to limit or monitor the use of mobile applications by the child.
  • Interface for inclusion of friends or relatives: If the parent wants to include other family members or friends who will be able to track the location of the child in case of need.

Each of these steps will make the solution even more functional and useful for parents, as well as improve the safety of children in multiple contexts.

Based on our experience from the "Click Safe" hackathon, we would recommend to our peers some important tips for safe use of the Internet and social networks:

  1. Do not share personal information with strangers – your number, address, school or photos should not be publicly available or sent to people you do not know personally.
  2. Use strong passwords – passwords should be long, complex and different for each application. Don't share it with anyone except your parents
  3. Don't accept unknown people as friends – someone with bad intentions can stand behind every profile. Be careful who you accept.
  4. Report any threat, harm or unpleasant message – to a parent, teacher or other adult whom you trust. Don't be silent!
  5. Limit your time online – set limits and use the internet in a useful and safe way.
  6. Be careful what you post – every post or photo stays on the internet. Think twice before sharing.
  7. Protect your devices – always use antivirus protection and regularly update your apps and devices.

The hackathon helped us understand how important it is to be digitally responsible and safe, and that each of us can contribute to a safer online community. Therefore, we encourage all our peers to be informed, careful and to support each other in the digital world.

Our participation in the hackathon "Кликни Безбедно" was an unforgettable and extremely useful experience. We were part of a dynamic, creative and inspiring event where we learned, collaborated and made friends with students from different schools, all with the same goal – to create solutions for a safer online society.
